Representatives of Tamil Organisations across Melbourne on a cold evening in the winter of 2018 came together in Glen Waverly with passion and purpose in their hearts to bring together the Tamil community in Victoria state under one roof. After deliberations process was kick started to find common ground and procedures to achieve the long cherished goals of building a strong, harmonious and resilient Victorian Tamil community preserving Tamil Language, Tamil Culture, Values and fostering Community unity.
Tamil culture is rooted in the arts and ways of life of Tamils and is expressed in language, literature, music, dance, theatre, folk arts, painting, sculpture, architecture, sports, media, cuisine, costumes, celebrations and traditions. The various Tamil organisations were pouring their passion, efforts and time to preserve aspects of Tamil culture for current and future generations based on unique circumstances and Tamil community needs. Aims, Vision and purpose for the proposed Consortium were drawn primarily to bring synergy between the Tamil organisations to achieve set goals.
Constitution was drawn after numerous discussions always keeping in focus the envisaged characteristics of the non-discriminatory all-inclusive secular not for profit Consortium.
Tamil Consortium of Victoria was incorporated in May 2019 with representative of all member organisations present. First election was conducted as set in the adopted constitution appointing the first cohort of office bearers.
This is a wonderful outcome and culmination of dreams of passionate Tamil leaders of Victoria state working for the wellbeing of Tamil community and preserving Tamil identity.
